As the conflict escalates between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray regional government, thousands of families are caught in the crossfires. Some have already found refuge in the neighbouring country of Sudan with hundreds of thousands expected to make this journey in the next few days.
According to the UN’s refugee agency, the UNHCR, says “a full-scale humanitarian crisis is unfolding” as thousands are fleeing the fighting and displaced from their homes.
Our partners stationed in the region working on clean water and education projects are now pivoting and have permission from the authorities to provide humanitarian assistance to people currently struggling to have their basic needs met.
Even though Run for Water works widely across the country, our main focus areas have been in rural communities in the Oromia region, the Tigray Region and the Southern Nations and Nationalities. So when we heard the news of this unfolding tragedy in one of our focus areas, we knew we had to respond.
We can’t do it alone; we need your urgent financial partnership to provide humanitarian support to families caught in the crossfire as they now face homelessness, unemployment, food insecurity, lack of financial systems, possible increased exposure to COVID-19, a lack of available medical treatment, as well as heightened stress and additional trauma due to the violence.
