Run for Water has been working with schools in rural Ethiopia to identify bright young girls who, despite having the best performance, would be forced to quit school due to lack of income.
Through this Educate a Girl program, these girls and their families are given goats and are trained on the raising and breeding of goats to create a sustainable source of income. While they are getting started in the first year, Run for Water funds the girls’ education which means paying for their rent (the girls live together near the high school), their school fees and all essential supplies, a tutor and a den mother.
By the end of the first year, the families have a big enough herd to cover the entire cost of the rest of high school and university. In many instances, the goat herd has grown so much that it is additionally sponsoring the education of younger siblings.
So far, 280+ girls are being empowered through this program.
